HUFFPED CELEBRATED WORLD TB DAY IN AJEGUNLE WITH PEOPLE OF THE COMMUNITY


Humanity family foundation for peace and development (HUFFPED) in conjunction with Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNI) organized the World TB day celebration recently at the Local government; Ajegunle witnessed by the people in the community, CV, MOH as well as health workers in the community.
The program which kicked off with a form of rally as well as road awareness show lasting for 2hours cut across notable streets in the suburb relaying issues that concerns TB and its spread to the residents as well as referring them to the nearest hospital where they can be given adequate check up and treatment with the help of VC present on field.
A total of 78 referrals were gotten; 43 male and 25females, their personal data and opinions were also taken note of for consistent follow up.
After the road walk and mobile sensitization, everyone gathered at Ajegunle LGA hall to have a one on one discussion and interactive session. The opening prayer was said by Deacon Ilesanmi at around 11am.
To prepare the mind of all present, Mrs. Onouha made them feel at home, relaxed and also briefed them on the relevance of a setting like this. She implored them not to take the occasion for granted and be attentive to every matter arising during the course of the program.
She went further to note that the theme for 2013 World TB day is:  STOP TB IN MY LIFE TIME. According to her, to combat TB in our society the onus falls on each and everyone present in every community. To encourage people who have the symptoms and also to encourage people to always be conscious of their environment as well as what they take into their body system and how they take it in.
To commemorate the topic in view for the day, Chairman Local health Authority, Ajeromi, Dr. Poopola appreciated everyone present at the occasion and showered appreciations to AHni as well as HUFFPED. For the giving the community the opportunity to be part of a Worldwide celebration and TB day dedication. According to him, it’s a priviledge that Ajegunle is a beneficiary to this once in a life time opportunity. He also implored those present to adhere to any word of advice and health tips given at the program as it would go a long way in helping their personal growth and development as one people, one nation, healthy and free from germs as well as infections.
In light to the first speaker, Mr. Ajose, TB leprosy Supervisor gave the first lecture on Tuberculosis as an epidemic in our society today. He noted that they now have 16 DOT centres, both Public and private and anytime from now would increase to 22. According to him, the public hospitals were some of the TB patients are, they are given free treatment but in their public counterparts, treatments and observation of patients are done at a subsidized fee.
Mr. Ajose noted that, because they want to practice Direct Observing Treatment, thus when they send their patients to Private hospitals, they are being told patients are to pay 1000 naira for registration then given drugs free of charge. But if they are the one that see the patient themselves from the beginning to diagnosis, care and all, the pay advances.
He went further to explain that until diagnosis, one can’t say he or she has Tb because some people cough but if it persists for 3weeks to 4 weeks, he or she is a patient.
While explaining, he noted that the TB is a sickness that is communicable and sensitive to spreading at a very fast pace. He advised that when people see anyone coughing, he or she should open their windows for smooth ventilation because of the discharge of infectious because of the discharge of infectious bacterium. Also, he advised that people should learn to cover their mouth with clean handkerchief the moment they sit close to people that coughs because the moment cough is released into the air, it circulate and people get infected within seconds.
He enjoined those and advised that for those that have started their medications as TB patients               as continuity is very important is combacting Tubercolosis in the community. In his words he said, ‘don’t discontinue your drug usage even when you notice the effect of the severe cough has subsided. Its not advisable. Continue your drugs till you have been medically instructed to discontinue, else one would assume he or she is already hale and healthy when reverse is the case’.
Also speaking at the program was Mrs. Lawal, she implored all present to always ensure that they maintain a clean surrounding, she presented her delivery in form of a song in Yoruba dialect that talks on cleanliness, according to her, when one tidies up his or her surrounding, there won’t be room for illness or ill-health. She explains in simple terms that TB is air borne and not just TB but also most diseases springs from dirt in our environment.
She enjoined all to keep their surroundings clean and try take their health serious and not with levity.
Mrs. Olaniyi, Apex CHO, Ajeromi encouraged everyone to take it as a point of responsibility to take their health seriously because the government won’t come down to force any individual. In her words, she said, ‘you own yourselves and you are responsibility for anything that happens to you’.
She commend the support of having an occasion like this, she appreciates AHnI as well as HUFFPED. She commends the MOH and the new CNO, also Mr Ajose who according to her as being a wonderful Supervisor.
There were opportunity to ask questions and raise issues that seem not clear and adequate answers were given to the questions.
