PEER EDUCATORS TRAINING 27TH FEBRUARY 2013 ORGANISED BY HUMANITY FAMILY FOUNDATION FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT (HUFFPED)

It was indeed a fulfilling and educative discussion at Goshen as HUFFPED trained and interacts with her Peer Educators on Wednesday 27th February 2013 at Goshem Secondary School.

The Section which took place in an interactive laden atmosphere had in attendance 24 students representing 3 different schools namely Goshem School, Bostom College, Adlak College, Ikorodu. Each schools having their representative to grace the training section.

A pre-test section was given to the students to test their level of intelligent quotient and activeness in terms of reasoning.

Facilitating first section was Mr. Onouha Olawunmi, where she laid bare issues revolving round the topic ‘friendship’. This section was more of interactive as the Peer Educators were given space to give and open up their opinions and views on all that pertains friendship. The criteria as well as yardstick they use in determining who ends up being their friends and how well they can sustain friendship with people that make long lasting positive impact in their lives.

She went further to ask questions on how and reason why people keep relationship at length of friendship and points at which young people should think about advancing their friendship to the next level. All this, she explained are solely dependent on the mindset and maturity level of both sexes.

She implored the Peer Educators to be focused and never relent as ambassadors of their school and also for their generation.

The second section and topic was handled by Ashogbon Adenike, a volunteer with HUFFPED and the section was a practical one as it was tagged GOAL SETTING. Here, Ashogbon implored the students to give themselves a workshop name that would enhance her communication during the course of the section. Students came up with their various workshop names and she gave herself the workshop name ‘Astute’. For the facilitator this was the swiftest decision the educators had to make under 60seconds and it was a pass.

The students were told to personally describe what Goals-Setting is as it is the combination of two important and powerful words. This was successfully done by the school representatives. Even as interactive as this section was, Ashogbon enjoined the students to enlist on their notes what they see as their strengths and weakness and it was discussed during the course of the training.

Emphasis was made on the students weaknesses as weaknesses debar one from achieving individual set goals. Take home task where also given to the Educators on getting people’s view about their personalities. The Peer Educators were also served their refreshment.

It was indeed another wonderful section with the teens at Goshem Secondary School Agric, as Humanity Family Foundation for Peace and Development commenced the Peer Educator training Day 2. Facilitating the section was Mrs. Onouha of HUFFPED as she talked extensively on how the students can groom themselves towards being ambassadors in their various schools.

One of the topic of discuss and facilitation was about HIV/AIDS. Before she dwelled on the topic, Mrs Onouha sampled the students opinion of what HIV and AIDs is all about. Their opinion as well as every information they might have heard and had about the epidemic.  After much opinion from the students, Mrs Onouha gave an in depth insight on what leads to HIV/AIDS and the reasons why students should not indulge in sexual activities till they are ripe and old enough in state of mind and are married.

According to her, teenagers should not have sex before marriage because it is not right and categorized as a sinful and illicit act which doesn’t show responsibility in youths. She gave practical illustration to back up her advise, after which a group work was administered to the students as well as a presentation.

In line with the topic, Mrs. Onouha spoke extensively on BODY Map and grouped the students in terms of gender, each gender, male and female were called out respectively to give an image in form of drawing of their selves then label the sensitive parts of their body.

To spice the section up, Onouha explained briefly what the body map is. This she explains is an outline of what and what one’s body stands for, the overview of the human body as well as his or her sensitivity. In all, Mrs Onouha encouraged the students to be role models in their environment as this would pay later in life rather than get so engrossed with negative influences from their peer groups.

Another topic discussed was ‘Sex Abuse’. She explained that Sex abuse can be referred to as molestation of any kind, also the forcing one sexual behavior of one person over the other. In lay man terms Mrs Onouha she noted that is an unwanted sexual activity with adoption of force over one person by another.

To round off the section, Onouha enjoined the students to be of good behavior and standard in all they do as this would make them stand out even amongst their peers. She went further to encourage them in the aspect of upholding good standards and be good wards and children. In her words, Mrs Onouha said, ‘your moral uprightness would speak for you even in latter years. Be of good and consistent behavior and this would speak for you everywhere you go’.

A pre-test was given to the Peer Educators inorder to test their level of intelligent quotient, there was refreshment and the programme came to an end with an opening Prayer by Precious.
